Install Nishio

Nishio is a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. Download the installer for your system, open it once, and everything runs on your own computer.

Applies to: Desktop 0.1 · Extension 0.1

Each installer contains the whole app: the interface, a local service, a background worker and a local SQLite database. Nothing listens beyond 127.0.0.1, and you do not need an account on any website to use it.

macOS

  1. Download the .dmg file for your Mac (Apple silicon or Intel).
  2. Open the .dmg and drag Nishio into the Applications folder.
  3. Open Nishio from Applications. A short “Starting Nishio…” window appears while the local service starts.
  4. If macOS asks whether Nishio may use “Nishio Safe Storage” in your keychain, choose “Always Allow”. The app uses the keychain to protect the key that encrypts your saved secrets, such as your YouTube API key.

Windows

  1. Download the Windows installer (Niche-Finder-…-win-x64.exe) and run it.
  2. The Windows build is not code-signed yet, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC”. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.
  3. When installation finishes, start Nishio from the Start menu.

Linux

Two formats are provided. Use whichever suits your distribution.

  • AppImage: make it executable with chmod +x Niche-Finder-…-linux-x86_64.AppImage, then run it.
  • Debian / Ubuntu package: sudo apt install ./Niche-Finder-…-linux-amd64.deb, then start Nishio from your applications menu.
What happens on first launchThe app creates its private data folder, prepares the database and opens a setup screen where you create your local owner account. See “First run” for the details.
Only one copy runs at a timeIf you open Nishio while it is already running, the existing window comes to the front instead of starting a second copy.
